Hormone Replacement Therapy at Hill Family Medicine

Hormone Replacement Therapy at Hill Family Medicine

Achieve Optimal Health with Personalized Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone changes can affect energy, sleep, mood, libido and how you feel day to day. At Hill Family Medicine, hormone therapy starts with a careful evaluation of your symptoms, history and lab work, and continues with regular follow-up so your plan stays safe and effective.

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy supplements hormones your body no longer makes in adequate amounts. It is most often used for symptoms of menopause and perimenopause in women and for low testosterone in men.

Possible Benefits of Hormone Therapy

  • Fewer Hot Flashes and Night Sweats
  • Better Sleep when menopause symptoms are disrupting it
  • Less Vaginal Dryness and Discomfort
  • Improved Libido
  • More Energy when low hormone levels are the cause
  • Bone Health after menopause

Results vary. Hormone therapy is not a treatment for depression, anxiety or memory loss on its own.

Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women

Women often experience hormonal changes during menopause, perimenopause, and postmenopause. Symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and vaginal dryness can significantly impact daily life. Our tailored HRT solutions help alleviate these symptoms and improve overall health.

Types of Hormone Therapy for Women

  1. Estrogen Patches, Gels or Creams: Applied to the skin.
  2. Progesterone: For women who still have a uterus, to protect the uterine lining.
  3. Compounded Bioidentical Hormones: When an FDA-approved option does not fit your needs (see below).

Hormone Replacement Therapy for Men

Men experience a gradual decline in testosterone levels, commonly referred to as andropause. Symptoms include decreased libido, fatigue, depression, and reduced muscle mass. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can help restore hormonal balance and improve quality of life.

Types of Hormone Therapy for Men

  1. Testosterone Gels or Creams: Applied to the skin daily.
  2. Compounded Bioidentical Testosterone: When appropriate.

Testosterone gels and creams can rub off on others. Cover the area, wash your hands after applying, and keep children and partners from touching treated skin.

About compounded bioidentical hormones. “Bioidentical” means the hormone has the same structure as the one your body makes. Some bioidentical hormones are FDA-approved. Compounded versions are custom-made by a pharmacy and are not FDA-approved, so they have not been reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or consistent dosing. We will explain your options, including FDA-approved ones, and help you decide.

Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Right for You?

If you’re experiencing symptoms of hormonal imbalance, HRT might be the right solution. Common signs include:

  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Mood changes and irritability
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Reduced libido and sexual dysfunction

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hormone therapy safe?

For many people, the benefits outweigh the risks when therapy is started at the right time, at the right dose, and monitored closely. Risks depend on your age, health history and the type of hormone. Estrogen can raise the risk of blood clots and stroke, and combined therapy over several years is linked to a small increase in breast cancer risk. Testosterone can raise red blood cell counts and can lower sperm production. We review your personal risks with you before you start.

Many people notice changes within a few weeks; it can take 3 to 6 months to find the right dose.

It may not be right if you have had breast or uterine cancer, blood clots, stroke, heart disease, liver disease or unexplained vaginal bleeding, or if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Common side effects such as bloating, breast tenderness or skin changes can often be managed by adjusting the dose.

With follow-up visits, symptom checks and lab work.
