Keeping Your Health in Check: Why Preventive Care Matters

Many serious health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and some cancers, cause no symptoms at first. Preventive care finds them early, when they are easier to treat, and helps you lower your risk before problems start.

Keeping Your Health in Check: Why Preventive Care Matters

A yearly visit is the foundation of preventive care. We review your health history, family history, medications and lifestyle, check your blood pressure and weight, and talk about what matters most to you. It is also the time to bring up anything that has been bothering you.

Screenings and lab work

Which screenings you need depends on your age, sex, family history and risk factors. Common ones include:

  • Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
  • Colorectal cancer screening, usually starting at age 45
  • Breast and cervical cancer screening for women
  • Discussion of prostate cancer screening for men
  • Thyroid, vitamin and other labs when your symptoms or history call for them

We order your labs, explain your results in plain language, and refer you for tests like mammograms and colonoscopies when they are due.

Lifestyle support

Small changes add up. We can help with nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, quitting tobacco and reaching a healthier weight, including through our medical weight loss program.

Mental health is part of prevention

Ongoing stress, anxiety and depression affect sleep, blood pressure, immunity and how well you care for yourself. We ask about mental health at every wellness visit and offer support early, before it becomes a crisis.

When something comes up between visits

For sick visits, minor injuries, follow-ups and specialist referrals, your same care team is here. For chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of a stroke or other emergencies, call 911.
